Nintendo (OTCPK:NTDOY) (OTCPK:NTDOF) said that it will will cease providing online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software.
As of April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for the aforementioned software as well as New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, Wii U Deluxe and Wii U Basic.
That includes online co-operative play, internet rankings and data distribution.
A specific end date and time will be announced later, though services may be discontinued ahead of schedule should an event occur making it difficult to continue.
Players will be able to keep playing offline.
In March, Nintendo (OTCPK:NTDOY) (OTCPK:NTDOF) cut off access to make purchases in the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
The Wii U console was released in 2012 and discontinued in 2017 and, according to Engadget, was one of the company’s worst-selling devices. The 3DS, launched in 2010 and discontinued in 2020, did better.
Shares of the company are down 3% year-to-date.
