The U.S. is focused on containing the war between Israel and Hamas, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, emphasizing the importance of preventing the conflict from broadening.
“I’m not seeing any major economic ripple effect,” at this point from the war that began when Hamas launched an invasion of southern Israel on October 7, Yellen reportedly said in Marrakech, Morocco, where’s she’s attending annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.
The former Federal Reserve boss said the global economy, which is still recovering from the pandemic and from Russia’s war in Ukraine, was faring better than she had expected.
Even so, “the countries that I worry about are the low-income countries,” as well as those with high debt loads amid higher interest rates, she told Bloomberg.
