Rishi Sunak is facing the prospect of a by-election in the Tamworth seat held by Tory MP Chris Pincher, who faces an eight-week suspension from the House of Commons after groping men in a private club.
An independent parliamentary panel rejected an appeal by Pincher against the suspension, recommended by the Commons standards committee in July.
The panel ruled that the sanction imposed on Pincher was “far from being arbitrary or disproportionate” and that the eight-week suspension should stand.
The move triggers a recall petition, under which Pincher’s Tamworth constituents can demand a by-election. He held the seat with a majority of just under 20,000 at the 2019 election, with Labour in second place.
